Your first surf lesson at Geraldton Back Beach should feel exciting, not stressful. Midwest Surf School supplies the boards and wetsuits, so most of your preparation is about personal comfort, sun protection, and getting to the beach on time. Use this checklist before you head to beginner group lessons or a private group booking.

What We Supply for Every Lesson
Softboards matched to your size and ability, wetsuits for cooler months, and qualified coaching are all included in a standard session at Back Beach. You do not need to buy or transport your own surfboard for a first lesson with us.
Our coaches also cover warm-up, paddling technique, wave selection, and basic surf safety before you enter the water. If you are unsure which program suits you, compare options on our Lessons & Programs page or call 0419 988 756.
Your Packing Checklist
- Swimwear to wear under the wetsuit. Board shorts or a comfortable swimsuit work well.
- Towel and dry clothes for after the session. Geraldton afternoons can stay warm, but a light layer helps if the wind picks up.
- Reef-safe sunscreen applied 20 minutes before you arrive. Reapply after your lesson if you stay at the beach.
- Water bottle. Surfing is more tiring than it looks, especially in your first hour in the ocean.
- Secure footwear for walking across hot sand or small rocks near the car park.
- Any required medication such as an asthma inhaler. Tell your coach about relevant health conditions at sign-in.
Before You Leave Home
Step 1: Confirm your booking time and meeting point. Lessons run at Geraldton Back Beach, near 251 Willcock Drive, Mahomets Flats.
Step 2: Eat a light meal one to two hours beforehand. You will need energy, but a heavy meal right before paddling can feel uncomfortable.
Step 3: Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early so coaches can fit wetsuits, assign boards, and run through safety rules without rushing.
Step 4: Leave valuables in your car or with a friend on the beach. Wallets and phones do not belong in the surf zone.
What You Can Leave at Home
Jewellery, loose sunglasses, and expensive watches are easy to lose in the water. Skip the fins and hard-top shortboards if you are a complete beginner. Our softboards are the right tool for learning to stand up on your first waves.
